How To Download Every iOS and macOS Wallpaper Ever

Apple has been known for two things; great UI, and products that are bug free. It may no longer be bug free anymore if you consider how many complaints users had this year and the year before. All that said, Apple still makes beautiful products, a well-designed OS, and it has the best stock wallpapers. Chances are, if you don’t own an Apple device, you might still have used some of their wallpapers. A Redditor has compiled an album of every iOS and macOS wallpaper that Apple has ever released. You can download them all.

The albums don’t just contain wallpapers but also contain other iconic images that Apple has used in the past. For example, the iOS album includes the dancing silhouette images that were used on iTunes gift cards.

All iOS Wallpapers

The iOS album contains wallpapers for iPhone X, iOS 12, iOS 11, all the way to the first iOS. They’re all HD. The iOS 3 wallpapers are 2048×2048 but the newer ones are sized to fit a modern smartphone’s screen better.

If you find the wallpapers are too small, or too square for your device, check the selection of iPad wallpapers. Of course, since the iPad was released later, you won’t find iOS 3 wallpapers that fit an iPad. Special wallpapers, such as those released for iPhone X Red are also included as are images used to introduce WWDC.

Download them here.

All macOS Wallpapers

Like the iOS album, the macOS wallpapers album has wallpapers from back when the operating system was called OS X and named after cats. You can find wallpapers from Puma, Snow Leopard, Lion, and more.

The wallpapers are all HD and you will find the size will fit most screens perfectly. Unlike the iPhone which has undergone a drastic change in size over the years, the difference in screen size hasn’t been as drastic for Macs.

Download them here.

It’s worth mentioning that the wallpapers may need to be resized for your respective device. Desktop users i.e., anyone on a Windows or Linux PC using the macOS wallpapers shouldn’t have too much trouble but smartphone users likely will need to resize an image before they can use it on their phones. If you’re using an Android phone and want to use one of the iOS or macOS wallpapers, check how your phone resizes images for the wallpaper. On some phones, if an image isn’t the correct size, the resulting wallpaper is a blurry, pixelated mess that makes a blank, black background look good.

How To Enable Do Not Disturb For Bedtime On iOS 12

Apple introduced a new kind of alarm in iOS 10 called Bedtime. This alarm helps you get a fixed amount of sleep everyday. If your daily sleep requirement is 8 hours, you can tell the Clock app what time it is you need to get up and it will tell you when to go to bed to get enough sleep, and wake up on time. It’s great but if you manage to get to bed on time and forget to turn on Do Not Disturb, your sleep isn’t going to be uninterrupted. Apple seems to have caught on which is why you can automatically enable do not disturb for Bedtime on iOS 12.

In order to enable do not disturb for Bedtime, you need to first turn on the Bedtime alarm. This is a new feature in iOS 12 which is currently in beta. The stable version will be released in September/October 2018. If you want to try it out now, you can join the Apple Public Beta program.

Do Not Disturb For Bedtime

Open the Clock app and go to the Bedtime tab. Turn Bedtime on, and configure it however you want. Once you’re done, tap the Options button at the top left. On the Bedtime Options screen, you will see a ‘Do not disturb during Bedtime’ switch. Turn it on, and when it’s bedtime, iOS will automatically turn Do Not Disturb on.

Once the option is enabled, your screen will no longer wake up when you get a new notification. The usual rules will apply; no phone calls and no messages will come through although if you get repeated calls from a contact, the notification will come through.

If your phone is unlocked, and in your hand i.e., you’re not really sleeping when you should be, you will get notifications. Do not disturb works when your phone is locked so if you’re going through it during your Bedtime, you will get new alerts.

On iOS 11, you can sort of still get this feature. The thing about Do Not Disturb is that you can schedule it so all you have to do is schedule it to start the same time as your Bedtime, and end it when you wake up. The downside of using this workaround is that when/if you change the Bedtime alarm, you will have to remember to change the Do Not Disturb schedule. Also, if you use Do Not Disturb for some other part of the day e.g., the first half of the workday, you will have to choose between the two.

How To Use Trackpad On Non-3D Touch iPhones

When Apple develops the next version of iOS, it does so specifically with the next, latest iPhone model in mind. Every feature is designed for the new device. Devices that are up to four and five years old will still get the new version however they don’t get all the features. For example, on iOS 10, only users with a 3D touch device could change the brightness of the flashlight but the feature has been extended to all devices in iOS 11. On iOS 11, Apple added a trackpad feature which, again, was only for 3D touch devices but iOS 12 changes that. You can finally use trackpad on non-3D touch iPhones with iOS 12.

Note: iOS 12 is still in beta. Users can try it out by joining Apple’s public beta program. The stable version of iOS 12 will roll out to users in September/October 2018.

Trackpad On Non-3D Touch iPhones

The trackpad feature on non-3D touch iPhones is limited; you can’t use the two finger tap gestures but you can control the cursor with the space bar.

To use the trackpad feature open an app that lets you bring up the keyboard e.g., the Messages app. Tap and hold on the space bar. The keyboard keys will all go blank. Swipe slowly on the space bar to move the cursor through the text in the input field. That’s about all it does for now.

This feature makes it easier for users to jump to a spot on the typed text. Before, users had to tap on the text and bring up the little magnification bubble and drag their finger across the text to position the cursor. It is clumsy to select text like this. This feature is still there in iOS 12 so if you liked it, you’re not losing anything.

This is of course good news for anyone with an older iPhone. Apple may sell a record number of iPhones every year but that doesn’t mean everyone gets one. A lot of people still make do with old devices and only upgrade when their phone has slowed down too much, or it is no longer updated. That means they don’t get a lot of the new features that the newest version comes with and some of them are pretty good. It’s good that Apple is doing this. The jailbreak community is always coming up with tweaks that make up for features like this e.g., there is a tweak that can add 3D touch to the iPhone 6/6Plus.

How To Use Instagram Story Questions

Stories have become a lot like the like button. At one point, every social media app had one. Now that almost every social media app has stories, they need to try and differentiate the feature on their own respective platform. Instagram is doing this by making its stories interactive. It’s added a new feature that lets you add questions to your Instagram story. It works via stickers. Here’s how you can use Instagram story questions.

Instagram Story Questions

Make sure you’re running the latest version of the Instagram app. The feature appears to have rolled out to all users so it should be available if you’ve got the latest version of the app. It’s available on both iOS and Android.

Open the Instagram app and tap the camera button at the top left. Take a photo, or select one from your camera roll. You can also record a video, or pick one from the camera roll. Once you select a photo or video, tap the sticker button i.e., the smiley face button. This will open the slider with all the stickers. There should be a Questions sticker. Tap it.

Once you add the sticker, you can type your questions. You have the usual color options available for the text color.

Anyone who views the story can choose to answer the question you ask. To view their replies, tap your story and then tap the number of views at the bottom left. The replies aren’t public however, if you tap a response you will see a ‘Share response’ option.¬†When you share a response, it takes you to the Story screen. You can add a video or picture and the question, along with the response, appears as a sticker on top. The response is shared to your story though you can probably send to to your friends too.

You can limit who can reply to your Instagram story questions. To limit the audience, go to the Story controls. Under the ‘Allow Message Replies’ section, you will see three options; Everyone, People you follow, and Off. The Off option allows you to disable replies to questions but that also makes the question feature useless unless it’s a rhetorical question you want to ask.

The feature isn’t bad. It compels people to do something other than just view a story. It’s definitely going to be great for brands but for ordinary users, it’s an easy way to interact with followers.

How To Open An Apple Maps Location In Google Maps

In iOS 12, CarPlay will support third-party apps. This means that if you prefer to use Google Maps for navigation, you can do so once iOS 12 rolls out. One thing that isn’t changing is Apple Maps still being the default maps app on iOS. You cannot automatically change the maps app and Apple Maps doesn’t let you export a location to a different maps app. If the need calls for it though, you can open an Apple Maps location in Google Maps. The process isn’t the most intuitive.

Apple Maps Location In Google Maps

The trick is to use the longitude and latitude information. That’s how all maps work. Open Apple Maps and add a marker to the location you want to open in Google Maps. Once you’ve dropped the marker, go to its details. The details section gives you the longitude and latitude information but you can’t copy it.

Instead, you need to use the Share option. From the share sheet, select the copy link option, and then paste it in Notepad, or in some other text app.

The longitude and latitude information will be part of the link. It’s a pair of numbers. Copy them to your clipboard and paste them so that they’re separated by a comma.

Next, open Google Maps and paste the numbers i.e., the longitude and latitude numbers inside the search bar. Google Maps will be able to jump straight to the location.

This works on both iOS and macOS but it’s unnecessary on macOS since you can choose to use whichever maps app you want.

Apple is likely to ever let users select their own maps app on iOS but if you use Chrome instead of Safari as your browser, you can use Google Maps for your location searches. Google has worked around the restriction by adding the ability to open its own apps. All apps on iOS can open other apps and Chrome leverages this to communicate with Google Maps. That’s how it opens YouTube links in the YouTube app.

Apple Maps has improved substantially since it debuted. It may not have the best location data for every country in the world, but for most countries it’s data has improved substantially. If you’re weary of the app, it’s worth giving another try. If you live in a country where the map data is still inaccurate and/or incomplete, you have good reason to want to use Google Maps over Apple Maps. It’s unfortunate that it’s so hard for the two to communicate but that’s how it is on iOS.
