How to watch City TV outside Canada

For many young Canadian who grew up in the city, City TV was an essential part of their youth. City TV is now official known as City, but most Canadian’s still use the old moniker. It offers a network of six different TV stations located in Canada’s six main metropolitan areas which are all renowned for their unconventional programming and which are targeted at a young demographic. It has proved to be pretty successful and, since landing the exclusive national rights to show the National Hockey League (NHL) in Canada, City’s audiences have continued to grow. More people of all different age ranges tuning in to watch Canada’s national sport, as well as enjoy their irreverent mix of news, comedy, drama, and reality TV.

However, if you are based outside Canada, but want to tune in to City TV’s programming, you will be disappointed. That’s because, while City TV does stream all of its content online, it blocks anyone from overseas being able to watch. This means that Canadian ex-pats, and others interested in Canadian culture and sport, cannot watch their favorite hockey team, keep in touch with local news, or watch some of Canada’s most popular primetime shows. But fortunately, there is a way around this. As we will explain in this article, it is quite easy to get around these restrictions and watch City TV no matter where in the world. All you need is a VPN, and to keep reading we will tell you the best ones to use and exactly how to do it.

How to watch City TV outside Canada

If you have ever tried to stream a City TV show from outsider Canada, you will know that it is a fruitless exercise. You quickly receive an error message on screen, like the one above, which reads “This video is restricted from playing in your current geographic region.” This message pops up because City TV are employing something known as geo-blocking technology. This is a simple technique which City TV uses to reads the IP Address of everyone who visits their site. Your IP Address includes details of exactly where your internet connection is based. If it tells City TV you are outside Canada, they will simply pop up this message and refuse to allow you to stream any of their programs.

But by using a VPN, it is possible to fool City TV into thinking you are in Canada even when you aren’t. A VPN works by redirecting all of your online traffic through its own server before sending it off to its intended destination. When your data passes through that server, it is tagged with the servers IP Address instead of your own. If that server is located in Canada, then the IP Address connected to your data will tell City TV that you are in Canada too and so you will be allowed to stream their shows. It really is that simple. All you need to do is follow these four simple steps to unblock City TV:

  1. Sign up for a VPN.
  2. Download their app onto your chosen device.
  3. Log-in to your VPN and connect to a server located in Canada.
  4. Visit the MYTF1 website or app and start streaming their programs as normal.

In fact, the only really difficult part is deciding which of the numerous VPN there are on the market to use. But, we can help you with that decision too.

Best VPN to watch City TV outside Canada

On the face of it, trying to decide which VPN is the best for streaming City TV shows outside Canada seems a daunting prospect. There are so many VPNs out there at the moment and all claim to be the best in the business. But the reality is that some are much more suited to streaming online content than others. When selecting the right VPN, there are a number of criteria you should be looking for:

  • Canadian servers available – To successfully stream City TV outside Canada, you will need a provider which offers a good selection of servers based in Canada.
  • Fast Connection SpeedsOnline streaming requires fast connection speeds, but some VPNs actually slow down your internet speeds. However, the best providers offer super-fast connections which are ideal for online streaming.
  • No bandwidth restrictions – Online streaming is very data intensive, but some VPNs limit the amount of data you can use with them. This is no good at all for online streaming, so always look for a provider which has no data restrictions.
  • Encryption strength and security–VPNs are an online security and privacy tool and the best providers will always offer strong encryption to keep user data safe when streaming City TV content overseas.
  • Effectiveness of privacy policies – Because City TV doesn’t want you circumventing their geo-blocking, your online privacy when doing so is important. Some VPNs offer better privacy protection than others, but the best all keep absolutely no user logs, making them ideal.

Using these criteria as our benchmark, we haver road-tested all the major VPN providers to see which offer the best service for users who want to watch City TV outside Canada. We found that there are three providers who can tick all of the boxes, deliver an impressive all-round service, and stream City TV without any problems:

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is one of the best-known VPNs on the market with a reputation for lightning-fast connection speeds. This reputation is well justified and makes them an ideal choice for online streaming. But they offer a terrific all-around service too. ExpressVPN also offers robust security and privacy protections. They employ 256-bit encryption as standard for all users and also have a guaranteed and proven no-logging policy, which means they keep absolutely no record of what you are doing online.

The ExpressVPN server network is one of the biggest around with more than 1,500 servers available in 94 different countries, including plenty in Canada. They have no data restriction in place whatsoever and with user-friendly apps available for almost every device, you can watch City TV just about anywhere with them. The only slight downside to ExpressVPN is that it is a little more expensive than some of its rivals. But, few can compete with their service which is why countless people have chosen to pay a little more for the best VPN around for online streaming.

EXCLUSIVE DEAL: Sign up for a year with ExpressVPN at $6.67 per month and get 3 months FREE! There’s also an amazing risk-free 30-day money back guarantee, just in case you’re not completely satisfied.

2. NordVPN

NordVPN is priced at a much more affordable level than ExpressVPN, especially if you choose their new three-year subscription deal. But that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality, because NordVPN pushes ExpressVPN extremely hard for the top spot on this list. Recent infrastructure investments mean their network of 1779 servers in 61 countries is now mostly made up of super-fast servers. There are plenty of Canada-based servers available too.

NordVPN also has strong security provisions available as well with 256-bit encryption available on OpenVPN connections as standard as well as lots of additional security features. These include including a kill switch, shared IP Addresses, double VPN servers (which reroutes your internet data via two servers for extra protection) and Onion over VPN servers (which pushes your traffic through the TOR Network and a VPN for additional security). NordVPN has no data usage restrictions whatsoever, offer a trustworthy no user logs police, and also has a great range of user-friendly apps. It is a really cost-effective service and another one geared to delivering online streaming that is fast and secure.

3. CyberGhost

Our third recommendation is CyberGhost, which offers a user-friendly VPN service that ticks all the boxes and is great for those who are new to VPNs. CyberGhost offers a great range of well-designed, user-friendly apps for almost every device. There is no need to configure them either because they are really easy to use. All you have to do is click on “Unblock Streaming” and then choose a server in Canada. CyberGhost will do the rest for you and all you have to do is visit the City TV website to start streaming.

As well as being easy to use, CyberGhost still offers strong security and privacy protections with 256-bit encryption offered across all connections and a reliable no logging policy in place too. Their server network is made up of more than 1,300 servers in almost 60 countries, including several in Canada. And there are also no data restrictions meaning you can stream as much as you like. CyberGhost lacks some of the bells and whistles of other providers, but for first-timers or those who like to keep things simple, it is the perfect solution.

What is City TV?

City TV, nowadays officially known as City, is a Canadian TV network owned by the Rogers Media Group. It comprises six owned and operated TV stations which are located in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Montreal. They also operate a cable TV channel for viewers in the province of  Saskatchewan and three independently-owned affiliate stations operating in smaller cities in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

The network can trace its roots back to 1971 when City TV began broadcasting in Toronto under the ownership of Channel Seventy-Nine Ltd. The group grew rapidly to cover most of the country and while ownership has changed over the years, it retained the City TV moniker right up to 2012, when they formally rebranded to City. For most Canadian’s, the term City TV has stuck though and their unconventional style, deliberate targeting of young demographics and unconventional approach to programs has helped them to cultivate a loyal audience. As many Canadian’s move overseas for work and global interest in Canada increases, so too does the demand to access City TV content overseas, which is why we have compiled this guide to help.

What can I watch on City TV?

Across the City TV network, there is a wide variety of different programing, mostly aimed at younger audiences. Their exclusive coverage of the NHL, with a particular focus on Canadian teams such as the Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators, has drawn big viewing figures. Their City TV News shows have also long been popular and are seen as a great innovator in the genre. They were one of the first channels to take news desks out of the studio and also to have reporters carrying their own cameras, in a style of journalism that has become known as video journalism.

City TV has produced quite a number of innovative original shows over the years too. As well as the usual selection of drama, comedy, and soap operas, they have also produced programming aimed at Canada’s ethnic minority groups, their own entertainment and variety shows, and even a few more risqué adult-themed shows, such as ‘Barely Cooking’. They are also home to the Canadian syndications of popular shows such as Canada’s Next Top Model and The Bachelor Canada, while they also have plenty of syndicated shows from the USA and the UK available too. It is this broad range of entertainment-focused content which so attracts young people to City TV and while their programing has moved more in line with that of their rivals in recent years, they are still the go-to channel for many young Canadians.

What devices can I stream City TV on?

City TV is available on local channels in the six Canadian cities referred to above. They can also be found on most Canadian cable and satellite TV packages too. For those who prefer to stream online, you can watch all of City TV’s content through their website, www.citytv.com. If you like to do your online viewing on mobile devices, the City Video app can be downloaded for both iOS and Android devices from the usual app stores. The Android app can also be downloaded onto a number of other devices too, most notably many different smart TVs.

However, readers should be aware that all of these apps use the same geo-blocking technology as the main City TV website. This means that if you are based outside Canada you will still not be able to stream content through the apps, even if you manage to download them successfully. But, if you use a VPN on your mobile device, these apps should work as usual as soon as you connect to your VPN’s Canadian server. Each of the VPNs we have recommended in this article offer apps for both iOS and Android devices as well as various other devices too. This means that with a VPN it is possible to watch City TV on just about any device anywhere in the world.

Conclusion

For young Canadian’s City TV remains the go-to place for entertainment and reality shows, exclusive coverage of the NHL, and innovate local news. However, if you are based overseas, City TV is not available unless you use a VPN. In this article, we have explained exactly what you need to do to stream City TV from outside Canada. We have explained what you should be looking for in a VPN provider and also highlighted our recommended providers to use to stream City TV overseas. Each costs only a few dollars a month to subscribe too and, given the wealth of great content available on City TV, offer excellent value for money for all Canadian’s based overseas.

Are you a Canadian expat or a fan of Canadian TV and culture? Have you been frustrated in your efforts to watch City TV overseas? How helpful was this article for you? Mobdro compatibility with iPhone and iPad – Can it be installed?

First and foremost, Mobdro was designed as an Android app. The core reason for this is because the operating system is easier to develop non-standard apps for, as Google doesn’t impose many restrictions on what type of content you can install on your Android device. Apple, on the other hand, is quite protective of its iPhone and iPad platforms. Can you still install Mobdro on this hardware to stream movies on the go?

Mobdro on iPhone

The sad truth about Mobdro is that it’s built for the Android operating system, not iOS. This means it runs like a dream on everything from Android smartphones to Android smart TVs and Fire Sticks. Try to install it on your iPhone, though, and you won’t have any luck. Mobdro simply won’t run on any iOS device whatsoever.

Mobdro on iPad

Both iPhone and iPad devices run Apple’s iOS software, with only minor differences between them. This means that by and large, apps that work for one device will work for the other, provided the creator took the time to adapt the resolution for an iPad’s larger screen. Mobdro’s fundamental incompatibility with iOS software means it unfortunately won’t run on iPads, not even fully jailbroken or hacked ones.

Claims of Mobdro ports for iOS

There are a number of third party services that claim to have a working version of Mobdro for iPhone or iPad. They come with instructions for iOS, download links, and complete tutorials for adding the streaming app to your device. Unfortunately, these services are fake, every single one of them! The Mobdro team states quite clearly on their website that they do not currently support iOS devices of any type. If you see Mobdro for iPhone or iPad, it isn’t real, and you should avoid it.

Alternatives to Mobdro for iPhone or iPad

Since you can’t install Mobdro on iPhone or iPad, what’s the next best option? Below we take a quick look at the best alternatives for Mobdro for anyone using an iOS device that needs a quick movie fix.

Netflix and Hulu

The mainstream content services are oftentimes the best alternatives for apps like Mobdro. Not only do Netflix and Hulu have a combined library of thousands of TV shows, movies, and full series, but they’re also extremely easy to use and perfectly compatible with iOS devices. You can install and use either one of them in a matter of seconds, and if you’ve never signed up with Netflix or Hulu before, you can start things off with a free trial to see how you like them. It’s worth trying a legitimate resource before hunting down something else, after all.

Kodi

The grandfather of them all, Kodi is a free and open-source media center app that runs on nearly every device currently on the market. This includes strong support for iOS devices like iPad and iPhone, along with streaming options that include Hollywood blockbusters, classic TV shows, live sports, broadcast cable channels, and so much more. This makes Kodi one of the best choices as an alternative to Mobdro.

The only catch to using Kodi is that you’ll have to install and manage third party extensions to maintain access to all the same content types offered by Mobdro by default. This can seem like an overwhelming task, but if you follow our guides below, you can get instant and free access to the best Kodi add-ons around, giving you full reign over all the movies and TV shows you can handle.

Stremio

Stremio is a media center app designed to make video discovery and streaming as straightforward as possible. With it, you can organize and watch a collection of movies, TV series, streaming channels, and live TV, all from a single unified interface. Stremio works well on a ton of modern devices, including iPhone and iPad, all with full support from the app’s coding team and a handful of third party add-on developers.

Stremio offers a good selection of free content by default. If you really want to make the most out of the software, though, you’ll want to investigate some of the software’s best extensions, both official content and unofficial releases. We’ve made the process easy for you by featuring the best Stremio add-ons in one location. Grab as many as you want and let the fun begin!

Live sports on iOS

While the above apps make for great alternatives to Mobdro, one area where they’re severely lacking is the ability to watch live sports. You can remedy this by following our guide on the best sports streaming apps for iOS, which includes a ton of suggestions for live, worldwide content, everything from football to soccer to UFC and golf.

Conclusion

Mobdro is an incredibly useful app that delivers a massive variety of content to your Android-based devices. If you don’t own a Fire TV or Android smartphone, you might feel like you’re missing out. With the alternatives listed above, however, you can replace Mobdro on your iPhone or iPad to get all the movies and TV shows you can handle, all for free.

This free piece of software lets you stream movies and TV shows directly to your television, all from the convenience of a single interface. Morpheus TV for Firestick even integrates with Trakt to help you monitor what you’re watching so you can keep up on all the latest shows as soon as they’re released.

Morpheus TV is one such app. To get started with this incredible piece of software and learn how to install Morpheus TV on Fire Stick, simply follow our guide below!

Remember to use a VPN with Fire TV and Fire Stick

VPNs are extremely important cybersecurity tools. It doesn’t matter if you’re streaming Netflix movies to your Firestick, watching live TV on your Android TV, or installing Kodi on Fire Stick to run third party add-ons, chances are your traffic is being monitored and recorded, all without your knowledge or permission.

To stay safe online, especially while streaming on Fire TV, you should always run a virtual private network in the background. VPNs encrypt every piece of data that leaves your device to make it both anonymous and unreadable to third parties. Without a VPN, anyone can spy on your activity, including cyber criminals and government surveillance agencies. With a VPN, however, you’re totally invisible.

IPVanish – The best VPN for Fire TV

IPVanish is one of the best VPNs on the market, and it’s perfect for Fire TV, Fire Stick, and plenty of other devices. The company’s focus on privacy makes it ideal for a wide variety of users, and the lightweight, easy to install app is the perfect fit for relatively low-powered streaming hardware.

IPVanish deploys a fast network of over 1,000 servers in 60 different countries, offering a wide selection of IP addresses for a solid foundation of anonymity. Your connection is secured with DNS leak protection and an automatic kill switch, as well, while a zero-logging policy on traffic and 256-bit AES encryption ensures data stays safe no matter what.

IPVanish is available to install directly to Fire TV and Fire Stick from the Amazon appstore. Click the installation link in your account once you sign up, then Fire TV will take care of the rest!

IPVanish offers a 7-day money back guarantee which means you have a week to test it risk-free. Please note that Addictive Tips readers can save a massive 60% here on the IPVanish annual plan, taking the monthly price down to only $4.87/mo.

Getting ready to install Morpheus TV on Firestick

Morpheus TV offers access to live TV channels, sports streams, movies, and so much more. Getting access to all of this amazing content is as easy as installing the Android-compatible app to your Firestick. Not sure where to begin? Follow our preparation steps below, then check out the complete guide in the next section.

Basics of sideloading

Sideloading apps like Morpheus TV simply means installing software that isn’t available on Amazon’s built-in app store. This is done through a variety of means, which we discuss in detail below. All you need to know is that sideloading required the use of Android-compatible apk files and some free software that’s capable of copying those files to Fire TV. It’s not nearly as complicated or intense as it sounds. In fact, most people can sideload new apps in just a few seconds!

Is sideloading safe?

Some methods for installing third-party content on Android or iOS difficult and invasive. Rooting and jailbreaking have the potential to actually ruin your hardware, as well. Sideloading, on the other hand, is safe, practical, and easy to do. The process doesn’t change your hardware at all, and sideloaded apps can be erased as easily as you would uninstall any standard app.

With sideloading, all you’re doing is using the device’s built-in functioning to add software without going through Amazon’s appstore. You’re not tampering with the operating system or doing anything the Fire Stick can’t handle, meaning sideloading is perfectly safe.

Trouble using a sideloaded app?

Most Android-compatible apps run fine on Fire TV when sideloaded. You may occasionally encounter software that doesn’t quite work with the large screen, remote control-driven format, however. In these cases you’ll want to install a third party mouse app that simulates a cursor interface on Fire TV. Remote Mouse for Fire TV (Android, iOS) is a great option, and it should help you get over any trouble spots when installing certain apps. Fortunately, Morpheus TV seems to work just fine without these additions.

How to install Morpheus TV on Firestick

Once your VPN is installed, you can finally venture forth and get Morpheus TV. Follow the steps below in order to install and activate Morpheus TV for tons of free streams.

Step 1 – Choose a sideloading method

There are several ways to get files from the internet to your Fire TV or Fire Stick. All of them have pros and cons, so which one you choose is essentially a matter of preference. To help you decide, we created a guide discussing which sideloading method is best. You’re free to select whichever one best suits your hardware setup. We’ll stick with adbLink and Downloader for the section below, as they’re the easiest, best, and most common sideloading methods around.

Step 2 – Download the Morpheus TV apk

Start by downloading the Morpheus TV apk file. Visit the downloads site and click the blue button marked Download Morpheus TV .APK. A file called com.android.morpheustv_1.66-82.apk will start downloading to your computer. Make sure to save it somewhere convenient, as you’ll need to access it again in just a moment.

Step 3 – Set up adbLink

Now it’s time to download and set up adbLink. On your PC web browser, head to the official adbLink website, scroll down and download the file for your operating system. Install it right away, then launch it.

Go to your Fire TV and navigate to Settings > About – Network. On the right you’ll see information about your connection to the internet, including device’s IP address. Write this down or memorize it, as you’ll need to enter it on your PC in just a moment.

Back in adbLink, click the New button next to the devices box and add your Fire TV. In the next window, type a description in the box, then enter the device’s IP address from above. Save the changes. adbLink will now be able to interface with Fire TV, provided both devices are on the same home Wi-Fi network.

From the adbLink main screen, choose the Fire TV you just added by clicking the Select device dropdown box in the center. Click Connect just beneath that. The connection will take a moment to resolve. Once it completes, you should see the device and status listed in the white boxes at the top of adbLink’s screen.

Step 4 – Allow Unknown Sources

By default, the Fire TV operating system disables external installations and prevents sideloading. You won’t be able to add third-party apps until you disable it. Amazon made it easy to toggle, so you just follow the steps below to allow unknown sources and start sideloading content.

  1. Go to your Fire TV’s settings page located at the top of the home menu.
  2. Scroll right and choose Device
  3. Move down to Developer Options
  4. Set Apps from Unknown Sources to ON.
  5. Accept the warning message about installing external apps.

Step 5 – Install the Morpheus TV apk

Now it’s time to put everything together. In adbLink, click the button marked Install APK. A file dialog will open. Navigate to where you saved the Morpheus TV .apk file. adbLink will confirm you want to install the apk. Click Yes, then the process will begin.

While the installation proceeds you should see an item in the Running Jobs box at the top, along with a progress bar at the bottom. It may take a few minutes for the installation to complete, but once it does, adbLink will notify you via dialog window.

Step 6 – Run Morpheus TV

Now you’re ready to go! With your VPN active in the background, turn on your Firestick and launch the Morpheus TV app. You should be able to select a movie stream and start playing your favorite shows right away.

How to install Morpheus TV with Downloader app

Don’t want to use adbLink and a separate PC to install Morpheus TV? The Downloader app is a great alternative. This useful piece of software installs directly to your Fire Stick and can be used to download apk files from the internet, no extra devices required.

Downloader is fast, free, and easy to use, though you will have to do some cumbersome typing with the Fire TV remote to enter URLs. Follow the steps below to install Morpheus TV with this handy application.

  1. Open the Amazon app store on your Fire TV.
  2. Search for Downloader and install the program.
  3. While that installs, locate the URL for the Morpheus TV apk. It should be the following: https://rawapk.com/morpheus-tv-apk-download/
  4. Open Downloader and type in the URL from above exactly as it appears.
  5. Download the apk file using the Downloader interface. Once complete, install it right away.
  6. Access the Morpheus TV program from the Fire TV main menu at any time, and enjoy the streams!

What’s on Morpheus TV?

Morpheus TV pulls from dozens of reliable, fast, and high-quality sources to deliver tons of fresh movie and TV show content on-demand. You can browse content on your device using a number of categories, including popular, trending, and genre-based. Some of the more recent films and television shows currently featured on Morpheus TV include the following:

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Avengers: Infinity Wars
  • Better Call Saul
  • Big Bang Theory
  • Black Panther

Morpheus TV also allows you to create watchlists to save TV shows and movies to watch later. You can turn on subtitles in multiple languages, download videos to watch offline, check ratings to decide if a movie is worth your time, and enjoy a snappy interface that’s completely ad-free!

Is the Morpheus TV app dead?

Some shocking news greeted Morpheus users in mid-2018. The creator of the app sent out a notification across the software’s interface to inform everyone that version 1.66 would be the last update released.

The end of Morpheus

The following message was sent to Morpheus TV users in September 2018 by the creator of the app:

I am sorry to announce that Morpheus TV will have no more updates after version 1.66.

This project was created with the intention of being used by a small group of people and was published in the Aptoide store for convenience because it facilitated distribution.

The app was never promoted on social media and it was supposed to be kept under the radar, but some YouTubers found it and started making videos and promoting the app by themselves.

At first, it did not bother me much because I thought people would eventually lose interest and keep using whatever apps they used before, but I was mistaken and should have ended this months ago. There are now thousands of users using Morpheus and that draws too much unwanted attention and the providers scraped by the app are being hammered with too many requests.

I have decided to pull the plug. The app will continue working but the amount of sources will reduce gradually with time because of the lack of scraper maintenance.

The project is going to be rebranded and development will continue under a new name and application ID.

Distribution will be restricted to a small group of individuals and hidden from public eyes like it was supposed to be.

What the shutdown means

Is Morpheus dead forever? Is there even a point to installing it on Fire TV? The good news is that Morpheus TV isn’t being recalled or removed from public distribution. For the time being it’s still alive and can stream from a variety of sources, just like always. As the months and years go by, however, these sources will slowly fade away. With no new updates to Morpheus TV, it will gradually lose the ability to stream content, rendering it obsolete.

Right now you can install Morpheus TV on your favorite device and use it without restriction. It may even continue to operate for a long time. Overall, though, you may want to switch to a Morpheus TV alternative, something like Kodi or Stremio that’s still under active development.

In the meantime, don’t download any project that claims to be the original Morpheus updated with new sources. Always look for version 1.66, and be mindful of which sites you use when getting new apks for your Fire TV.

Conclusion

Now that you’ve got Morpheus TV on your Firestick, what do you plan on watching first? Catching up on some Hollywood blockbusters? Binge watching a few old TV shows? Let us know in the comments below!

How to watch Rakuten TV outside Japan

The Japanese video-on-demand (VOD) streaming service Rakuten is looking to shake up the established order of online streaming services. And it is doing a pretty good job of it. Some readers may only recognize the name Rakuten from their shirt sponsorship deal with soccer behemoths FC Barcelona. But their online streaming service is now available in no fewer than eleven different European countries as well as their home nation, Japan. And their rapid expansion plans look set to continue.

For a relative newcomer to the VOD market, Rakuten already offers an impressive roster of content. They can offer content from almost all the big Hollywood studios as well as many local and independent distributors too. Like competitors such as Netflix, Rakuten can be streamed on almost any device, but their pricing structure is different, with payment made for individual movies or TV shows rather than a one-off monthly fee to access everything. This approach seems to be bringing them success and their popularity is growing around the world. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about Rakuten TV including how to access your account outside Japan, or one of the other European countries where they operate.

How to watch Rakuten TV outside Japan

While Rakuten is challenging the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, it does not yet have the global reach of these VOD providers. Unless you are located in Japan or one of the twelve European countries they currently serve, you will not be able to access the Rakuten TV service. And if you are based in one of those countries, but travel elsewhere, you will also find access blocked. Even if you go to another country where Rakuten TV is available, you find some services restricted and some content unavailable.

However, there are a few ways that you can watch Rakuten TV from outside Japan and the European countries it operates in. Quite a few readers have asked about whether there is a Rakuten TV addon for Kodi available. At the moment, there is no official or unofficial Kodi addon which offers access to Rakuten TV that we are aware of. This means that the best way to access Rakuten TV outside Japan is to use a VPN. A VPN will reroute all of your online activity through an external server. This will hide your own IP Address and tag your data with the IP Address of the VPNs server. If the server is located in Japan, or one of the twelve European countries where Rakuten TV is available, then it will have an IP Address from that country and you will be able to access Rakuten TV no matter where you are.

Best VPNs to watch Rakuten TV outside Japan

The decision over which VPN to choose if you want to watch Rakuten TV overseas can seem like a daunting one. There are a lot of VPNs on the market at the moment, all of which claim to be the best in the business. But not every VPN is ideal for online streaming, especially for services like Rakuten TV, which offer a lot of 4K and Ultra HD content. This is where we come in. We have tested all the main VPN providers to see which work best with Rakuten TV. And we have also taken on board user feedback about their experiences too. On that basis, we have concluded that the best VPNs to watch Rakuten TV outside Japan need to offer the following things:

  • Fast Connection Speeds – All online streaming requires the fastest internet connections possible and 4K or Ultra HD content needs this even more so. Some VPNs can slow your internet connections down, but the best will have a negligible effect and be able to stream all types of content.
  • No bandwidth restrictions – Online streaming is very data intensive, so Rakuten TV users need a VPN with no bandwidth restrictions, allowing them to stream as many TV shows and movies as they want.
  • Size of server network –the more international servers a VPN offers, the easier it is access Rakuten TV around the world.
  • Encryption strength and security–Rakuten TV don’t like people access their service overseas, so strong VPN encryption stops them or anyone else seeing what you are doing online.
  • Effectiveness of privacy policies – VPNs help to keep user’s online data private by masking their IP Address. Strong privacy protections mean there is no risk of user’s online activity being passed to third-parties.

On the basis of these criteria, there are three VPNs which we would recommend readers use to access Rakuten TV outside of Japan or its operational countries in Europe. Each of these providers ticks all of the boxes and in testing offered a first-rate service which allowed users to enjoy uninterrupted streams of any Rakuten TV content they liked:

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is one of the most popular VPNs and is ideal for Rakuten TV users thanks to its combination of fast connections, strong security and privacy provisions, and ease of use. As the name suggests, ExpressVPN specializes in super-fast connections which are perfect for streaming 4K or Ultra HD content. Their security features include a strong 256-bit encryption, a no-logging policy, an IP address checker and DNS leak protection. Meanwhile, being based in the British Virgin Islands means they can offer some of the most robust privacy protections around.

The ExpressVPN server network is one of the most extensive around too. It currently numbers more than 1,500 servers in 94 different countries around the world. There are no bandwidth restrictions for ExpressVPN users either and they have a great range of apps for almost every device. If there is a downside to ExpressVPN, it is that they are a bit more expensive than many of their rivals. But, the level of service offered means that many are happy to pay a little more for their premium VPN service.

2. NordVPN

NordVPN is one of the most cost-effective VPN providers around right now, especially thanks to their exclusive new three-year subscription deal. But, despite their low prices, they still offer one of the best VPN services around. There was a time when NordVPN had a reputation for being a bit slow and we would probably not have recommended them for streaming 4K and Ultra HD content. But they have made huge recent investments in upgrading much of their network to super-fast servers. The result is that their speeds are now are now among the fastest and most consistent around.

NordVPN’s server network is a substantial one too. They offer a whopping 1779 servers across 61 countries globally. Their security provisions are pretty robust as well, with 256-bit encryption on OpenVPN connections as standard and the usual features such as a kill switch and shared IP Addresses available too. They also offer an impressive range of additional security features too, such as a double VPN server option, which reroutes your internet data via two servers for extra protection and Onion over VPN servers, which pushes your traffic through the TOR Network and a VPN for additional security. There are no restrictions on bandwidth either, which means NordVPN is another perfect VPN for Rakuten TV users.

3. CyberGhost

CyberGhost is the perfect VPN for newcomers who want to do little more than connect their VPN and then forget it is there. CyberGhost is the perfect bet for this as their easy-to-use apps require absolutely no configuration or technical knowledge. If you want to watch Rakuten TV, you just open up the CyberGhost software and click on the option for “Unblock Streaming”. Click on an option for either Japan or one of their twelve European countries, and that’s it. When you visit the Rakuten TV site, the service should be available as usual.

CyberGhost may be easy to use, but it still offers some robust protections including 256-bit encryption and great privacy protections including a trustworthy no logging policy. Their sizable server network offers 1300 servers in nearly 60 countries. And you can use their simple apps on pretty much every device around. If you are new to VPNs and a little nervous about them, CyberGhost is a great entry level provider, which still offers a premium level service.

What is Rakuten TV

Rakuten TV is the latest challenger to hit the online streaming market and mount a challenge to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime. Until 2012, the service was known as Wuaki.tv and was focused primarily on the Japanese marketplace. But then it was purchased by Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten. They are currently the world’s third largest e-commerce company so brought considerable financial clout and ambition to the service. In 2017, it was rebranded as Rakuten TV in line with its parent company.

Since the takeover, Rakuten TV has expanded rapidly into the European marketplace. It began by entering the Spanish marketplace and this has grown to no fewer than twelve different countries. You can currently access Rakuten TV in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The TV arm of Rakuten now based in Barcelona (hence their FC Barcelona sponsorship) and while the service is still available in Japan, the focus is clearly now on making Rakuten TV an international brand.

What can I watch on Rakuten TV?

For a relative newcomer to the market, Rakuten TV offers an impressive line-up of content. Their catalog includes TV shows and movies from big Hollywood studios including Warner Bros., Disney, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. They also have agreements with local distributors to stream local content in many of the countries where their service is available. And the company also strives to offer a broad range of independent cinema too.

The precise content does vary depending on which country you are in, but across the whole service, there is a different content focus from rivals like Netflix. Rakuten TV is trying to tap into the real cinema experience and bring that into your home. As a result, they offer one of the biggest selections of 4K and Ultra HD content available anywhere.  And they also strive to get new movie releases up onto their service quicker than their competitors. Rakuten TV CEO Jacinto Roca has been upfront about his desire to shorten the theatrical release window. So, Rakuten should be the go-to VOD service if you are looking for the latest cinema releases and the highest quality streams possible.

What devices can I watch Rakuten TV on?

Rakuten TV is available on all major devices because, like Netflix, it is striving to be the go-to VOD service no matter what devices you use or where you are. As a result, you can download the Rakuten TV app onto your Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromecast, Roku, and Xbox One devices.

One of the devices the company has been particularly targeting is Smart TVs too. As part of their ‘the best of cinema, the best of home’ campaign, they have been attempting to sell their service as an opportunity to enjoy a real cinema experience in the comfort of your own home. And while streaming on mobile devices and computers remains popular, it is Smart TVs that really allow their customers to get close to the cinema experience.

Conclusion

If you are keen to access Rakuten TV outside Japan, you have a choice. You can move to one of the twelve European countries where their rapidly expanding service is also currently available. Or you can opt for a VPN. As we have explained, a VPN can help to unblock Rakuten TV no matter where in the world you are. All you need to do is sign up and connect to a server in one of the countries where Rakuten TV is available. Once you are connected, Rakuten TV’s VOD streaming service should work as usual. Not every VPN is ideal for Rakuten TV, not least because of the high number of 4K and Ultra HD movies and TV shows they have available. So, we have tested all the main providers to recommend the three best VPN providers for the job.

Are you a Rakuten TV user? How do you find the service? Is it better or worse than Netflix? Have you used Rakuten TV with a VPN? Which VPN provider did you use? Was it one of the ones we recommend? How did you find their service? We always like to hear the comments and opinions of all our readers, so why not share them with us using the comment box below?

RTP Play Kodi Add-on: Install and Watch Portuguese Live Streams

RTP is the Portuguese state-run public service broadcaster. It operates a number of television channels and radio stations in Portugal and across other parts of the Portuguese-speaking world. Its online streaming service, RTP Play, is the most popular in the country and offers live streams of all their TV channels as well as on-demand access to many of their shows. However, it is not available to internet users outside Portugal and this has left many ex-pats and Portuguese-speaking internet users resorting to unofficial Kodi add-ons and other such sources to watch RTP shows. But now that has all changed because a new RTP Play Kodi add-on has arrived. And furthermore, it is available from the official Kodi repository. This means that, even though this add-on has not been created by RTP themselves, it is guaranteed 100% legitimate and above board.

In this article, we will tell you how to download and install the RTP Play Kodi add-on, what you can look forward to watching on it, and how to use the add-on to stream content outside Portugal using a VPN.

Quick reminder

If you want to access the RTP Play add-on from outside Portugal, the chances are you will need a VPN to do it. But even if you don’t, it is still strongly recommended to use a VPN when streaming any content on Kodi. This is because using Kodi can draw unwanted attention from the authorities or even your ISP. There is no shortage of unofficial add-ons which can enable access to pirated content. Law enforcement and copyright lawyers know this all too well and there are plenty trying to catch out unwitting Kodi users. If you are caught, the consequences can be severe with legal notices, fines, and even having your internet connection cut not uncommon.

By connecting to a VPN before you stream on Kodi you are encrypting all of your online data and also hiding your IP Address. This makes it much harder to trace your Kodi viewing habits back to you. By using a VPN, you can stream content safely, privately, and with confidence. The only question is, which VPN to use?

IPVanish – Best VPN for Kodi

Choosing a VPN for Kodi is actually quite a simple decision because IPVanish is head and shoulders above the rest. It offers the perfect combination of speed, privacy, and anonymity that Kodi users are looking for. With IPVanish you can benefit from 256-bit AES encryption, a zero-logging policy on all traffic, DNS leak protection, and an automatic kill switch.

They also have a huge network of servers, with more than 1,000 servers available in 60+ countries. All of these servers benefit from IPVanish’s super-fast connection speeds and offer a level of reliability few other VPNs can match. IPVanish subscribers also benefit from a great range of apps and ten simultaneous connections with every account, meaning you can use Kodi on all your devices.

IPVanish offers a 7-day money back guarantee which means you have a week to test it risk-free. Please note that Addictive Tips readers can save a massive 60% here on the IPVanish annual plan, taking the monthly price down to only $4.87/mo.

What is the RTP Play Kodi add-on?

RTP Play is the online streaming service of the Portuguese state broadcaster, RTP. The new RTP Play Kodi add-on is the first to make all of RTP’s channels easily available for Kodi users. The add-on has been developed independently of RTP, but it is hosted in the official Kodi Repository and this is important. Kodi’s developers, the XMBC Foundation, are very protective of their official add-on repository and only allow add-ons which are 100% legal to be hosted there. This means it is safe to assume that RTP has given this add-on their seal of approval.

One of the reasons for this could be that the RTP Play add-on doesn’t offer users all the features of their online streaming service. On the RTP website, users can access on-demand content, live and on-demand radio content, and more. The RTP Play Kodi add-on has a much more pared-back offering with just the eight major RTP TV channels available to stream live. That may sound pretty minimal, but for Portuguese ex-pats and those with an interest in Portuguese culture and current affairs, it is still a fantastic resource. The channels that are currently available on the add-on are:

  • RTP 1 (Televendas)
  • RTP 2 (Euronews)
  • RTP 3 (Telejournal Açores)
  • RTP Internacional (Trio d’Ataque)
  • RTP Memoria (Noite se Reis)
  • RTP Madeira (RTP 3 (Madeira))
  • RTP Açores (Telejournal Açores)
  • RTP África (Nha Tera Nha Cretcheu)

How to Install the RTP Play Kodi add-on

Because the RTP Play Kodi add-on can be found in the official Kodi repository, downloading and installing it is extremely easy. All versions of Kodi come with the official repository pre-installed, so all you have to do is look for the add-on and then click install. For those not very familiar with Kodi, here is a simple step-by-step guide you can follow to get everything set up:

  1. On the Kodi homepage, navigate to Add-ons > Add-on Browser (open box icon).
  2. Select Install from Repository > Kodi Add-on Repository > Video Add-ons.
  3. Scroll down the list until you see RTP Play. Click on it and then click
  4. Wait for Add-on enabled notification.
  5. RTP Play will now be listed in the Video Add-ons section of your Kodi menu.

How to use the RTP Play Kodi add-on outside Portugal

The RTP Play Kodi add-on is really simple to use. When you open the add-on, the main menu consists of a list of the eight available channels. All you have to do is click on your preferred channel and it will start to stream. It really is that easy! The only complication you might encounter is if you are located outside Portugal. RTP only holds the rights to stream much of its content in Portugal. They are therefore required to block access to their online streaming service outside the country.

With the Kodi add-on, this seems to be less vigorously enforced than through their website. Our testing found the add-on does work in some countries, but not others. If you find the streams are not working where you are, there is a simple workaround to the problem using your VPN. This workaround should work with any VPN, but we have tested it with IPVanish, our recommended VPN for all Kodi users, and found it effective.

Here is our step-by-step guide on how to use IPVanish to unblock the RTP Play Kodi add-on:

  1. Log into IPVanish as usual.
  2. Select one of the servers located in Portugal (at the time of writing there are six available) and click connect.
  3. Once you are connected, open Kodi.
  4. On the main menu select Add-ons > RTP Play.
  5. Click on your chosen TV channel.

The RTP Play Kodi add-should now play as usual. If it doesn’t, try repeating the process but connecting to a different Portuguese server. That should do the trick.

How does the RTP Play Kodi add-on perform?

It is difficult to find much fault with the RTP Play Kodi add-on. It is one of the simplest Kodi add-ons you will ever use, so there isn’t a lot that can go wrong. The main menu is a list of the eight available RTP channels. The listing is in Portuguese, but as all the channels broadcast in Portuguese too, it is safe to assume that most users will be able to understand. From the main menu, you can play your chosen channel just a single click. There is literally nothing else you need to do.

In our testing, the playback quality of all the channels was excellent. We encountered no issues with buffering or other interference either. The add-on gives no indication of the quality of the stream, which may annoy some users, but while the playback didn’t appear to be of HD quality, it was certainly very watchable, and we encountered no issues with picture quality. Regular users of the full RTP Play service may miss the additional features, such as live radio and on-demand content. It is possible these might be added to the Kodi add-on later. Some users would no doubt welcome this, but there is also the risk that added features could detract from this add-on’s user-friendly interface.

Conclusions

RTP Play is an essential online streaming service for Portuguese-speaking people around the world. And now it has arrived on Kodi with a pared-back add-on that is simple to use and offers a great service. It doesn’t boast all the bells and whistles of the full RTP Play service. But it does offer a fantastically straightforward way to access high-quality live streams of all the main RTP channels. The RTP Play add-on is hosted in the official Kodi repository which means it is 100% legitimate too. But despite this, it is still strongly recommended to use a VPN with this and all other Kodi addons. With the RTP addon, you may even need one if you want to watch outside Portugal.

Have you used the RTP Play Kodi add-on? How did you find it? Would you like to see the developer adding any additional features or do you like to keep things simple? Were you watching outside Portugal? Did you need to use a VPN to do this? How did IPVanish perform for you? We always welcome the feedback and comments of readers, so why not share them with us using the comment box below?
